SpongeBob checks into Exodus International

I thought this was so funny I had to share. It can orginally be fround at Larknews.com.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Cartoon actor SpongeBob Squarepants checked into an Exodus International program Wednesday, hoping to leave behind a life of homosexuality he now dubs "duplicitous and shameful." The celebrity sponge said through a spokesman that he intends to immerse himself in the Christ-centered program. "For years, SpongeBob has struggled with his sexual identity," said his spokesman, reading from a prepared statement. "He hopes to emerge from this program cleansed." Other gay children's characters expressed disappointment. Bert and Ernie of Sesame Street told reporters SpongeBob is "denying who he is." "He's setting us back fifty years," Ernie said from his and Bert's Upper West Side penthouse. SpongeBob has said in past interviews that his sexual confusion began when he learned his parents were, like all sponges, hermaphroditic, switching gender roles throughout their life cycle. "It was traumatizing," he says. "It tore a big hole in my personality." The beloved yellow children's character, who has gained fans because of his guilelessness, hopes to settle down with another sea creature once his show runs its course. "When syndication kicks in, I can retire and start spawning, like a normal sponge," he told Entertainment Weekly last April. •

That is funny, but on a serious note, I am very sick of people saying that kids characters are gay. First of all, they most likely aren't meant to be that way. Secondly, kids don't catch it, they just see fun, furry, or nice puppets. It's us sick minded adults that read stuff into it that's not really there. So get over it world, big bird, bert and ernie, and whoever else you may "suspect" is simply a kids character on a kids show acting in friendly ways to each other. Would you really rather they watch Yu Gi Yo and all that weird mystic stuff, I don't at all. Anyways. Maybe I am nieave and there really is stuff there, but then again maybe sick minded adults should work at evangelizing kids instead of assinatining their fun, friendly, TV friends. Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest all.

Hi John. I linked to your site via Joe at Joe's Jottings. I've been perusing your previous posts.

God opened my spiritual eyes to His sovereignty last Nov, and I've never looked back. I'm not so much into the 'labels' like Calvinist, but my theology is reformed. This doctrine has increased my faith. My background and all my teaching has come from the Baptist denomination. I have found that, to our detriment, they have chosen to simply ignore the more diffictult texts in Scripture. Thankfully, I have found a church that unashamedly teaches the entire Bible - difficult texts and all.

The most profound teaching I have heard on the sovereignty of God comes from my own pastor, and it's entitled Does God Have Two Wills? Fantastic stuff.

Anyway, I enjoy your blog, and just wanted to weigh in!

That is SO funny!

There is something pathetic about Christian leaders ascribing actual human characteristics to cartoon characters.

Remember the Tele Tubbies?

I don't mean to offend anyone here, but christians don't mind it so much when they apply human characteristics to god.

Just an observation.

-thanks for weighing in.I am glad you enjoy it here.

Joe
yeah I remember the teletubies and how TinkyWinky was supposedly gay. Its funny for the record Dobson never did call Spongebob gay but thats how the media distorted. And Fawell did though sucessfully out the teletubby.

-To put it simply the reason we have speak of God having "human" attributes is because we are created in the image of God so its really us who have some God-like characteristics.

John...is anything ever that simple? :P

Even if we grant compelete validity to a theistic argument, it would make no assertions about the characteristics of the being. Let's say for a second that there is some greater being...shall we interpret it as the Judeo-Christian God, as a Hindu deity, as an Olympian god, etc..? You obviously believe that the Bible is the source of understanding of this being, but you believe this because the being has "told you such" (using the phrase loosely) and you take it on faith. That's all well and good, but the characteristics given to god are done after you've already made a commitment of faith.

To use philosophical terms I have two pressuppositions. There is a transcedent yet eminent God. The second is he has reveiled himself to all men in a general way through creation and a personal way through the Bible. The Bible tells us what we know about God and what God requires of us. To put use relational terms I know God personally.
Oh btw I know the Bible is God's word from a a variety of reason not simple because this "being has told me such"
You say that "That's all well and good, but the characteristics given to god are done after you've already made a commitment of faith." Well of course you can only know God through faith that being trust in the atoning work of Christ to let you have a relationship with God. But that does nothing diminish the fact that God has whatever traits he has before I come to know him. So I guess in conculsion I don't know what point you are trying to make.

If you're willing to continue this discussion, maybe we should move it to email? I don't want to clutter your blog.

But to answer your point, my problem hinges on what reasons you have to accept the authority of the Bible. To restate that:

Presupposition one posits some higher being (not sure I like the inclusion of 'eminent' here). Presupposition two attaches certain predicates to this being (omnipotent, omniscient, etc...) based on the scripture contained in the Bible.

If I only accept the first (for the sake of the argument), then I am left with a higher being that I cannot describe. So what reason do I have to describe the being with characteristics from the Bible? Why should I take that step?

Does that make it any more clear?

Sorry for taking so long to respond I've been ultra busy.

Here is why I believe the Bible is athorative. I came to know God in a personal way through his son Jesus Christ. After I came to know God through my relationship with God he told me through the Holy Spirit that the Bible is his world. Right after my conversion from atheism I myself did not automatically believe the Bible. I did after reading and the Holy Spirit showed me it like no other book and it is God's word. So I came to believe in the Bible because God himself gave me confindence in it through my personal relationship with him. You probably will then ask what if you never had that experiace where God revealed himself to you much less his word. There are a number of ways God has given that show the Bible is his word. I suggest going to this website to take a start on investigating whether the Bible is true:
http://www.everystudent.com/features/bible.html
It talks about how the Bible is the only holy book with fulfilled prophecy, its also back uped by archaelogy, and how even ancient secular sources will confirm the Bible. If are truelt interested in taking a real look at the issues you can start there and if you want to continue I can email other sources. Any sorry for my delayed reply.
